June 1, 2007 - I arrived at Independence Pass at 8:30 a.m. for my first ever
adventure on snowshoes. As you can see, there is still plenty of snow up there,
but it is melting somewhat rapidly. |
I was quite giddy to be snowshoeing for the first time in my life, and I used the timer on my camera to capture the top left and bottom photo. Another skier snapped the top right photo with the mountains in the background. |
I hiked up to a hill known as Heart Attack Hill, located southwest of Independence Pass. It's a really pretty area with grand views of the mountains. |
Many skiiers trek up to Snowdrift Ridge, the peak in the center of the adjacent photo. |
Notice the very small-sized skiers way down there! |
The view on the Pitkin County side of the pass that includes the highway. |
I met Steve Share of Minnesota up there. Steve has been committed to skiing somewhere every month this year, and I was more than happy to snap this in-action photo of him skiing by! |
On the way down, I took this picture of the highest
switchback on the east side of the divide. Folks, if you're wise, you will not
take this road lightly in any way. If you miss this turn for whatever reason, your car is going to crash perilously. (That's my public service announcement to wrap up this trip report! -Steve) |
